During a meeting held in New York City on September 17, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended an invitation to Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, to establish an electric car manufacturing facility in Turkey. The encounter between Erdogan and Elon took place at Turkish House, a towering structure near the United Nations, preceding the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which the Turkish President is scheduled to attend.

Reportedly, during this meeting, Elon Musk acknowledged that numerous Turkish suppliers are already collaborating with Tesla, and he emphasized that Turkey is among the leading contenders for the location of Tesla’s next production plant. This information was relayed by Turkey’s communications directorate via Reuters.

Turkey has maintained its status as a significant manufacturing hub for international corporations, accommodating factories for renowned automakers like Fiat, Renault, Hyundai, Toyota, and Ford. In the year 2022, Turkey’s automotive industry produced a total of 1,352,648 vehicles, ranking it as the 13th largest vehicle producer globally.

Additionally, Turkey boasts the presence of TOGG, an electric vehicle startup and the nation’s inaugural domestic electric vehicle manufacturer. Tesla officially entered the Turkish market in April.

The meeting, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, also witnessed President Erdogan expressing Turkey’s willingness to collaborate on artificial intelligence initiatives and engage with Starlink, the satellite internet venture developed by Elon’s SpaceX.

Elon, in response, conveyed SpaceX’s interest in working with Turkish authorities to secure the necessary licenses for offering Starlink satellite services within the country, as per the communications directorate’s statement. Furthermore, President Erdogan extended an invitation to Elon to attend the Turkish aerospace and technology festival, Teknofest, scheduled to occur in Izmir at the end of September. Musk reportedly expressed his eagerness to participate.

In light of Tesla’s confirmation in March regarding the establishment of a new electric car manufacturing plant in Mexico’s northern state of Nuevo Leon, there has been heightened curiosity surrounding the location of Tesla’s forthcoming production facility. Just last month, Tesla publicly expressed interest in establishing a factory in India dedicated to producing affordable electric vehicles, after years of pursuing discussions with Indian authorities.

Currently, Tesla operates six factories and is in the process of constructing a seventh in Mexico, as part of its ambitious global expansion strategy. Elon Musk had previously stated in May that Tesla would likely make a decision regarding the new factory’s location by the end of the year.

Elon Musk is also anticipated to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California on September 18. Musk announced on the social media platform X that their discussions would primarily revolve around artificial intelligence technology.

Interestingly, during the meeting, Elon Musk was accompanied by his son, known as “Lil X,” which is quite unusual given the billionaire’s infrequent public display of his family. This unexpected presence led to an awkward exchange when President Erdogan inquired about Musk’s wife’s whereabouts. Musk responded by revealing that she was in San Francisco, explaining that they were separated, and he was primarily responsible for his son’s care.
