Facebook users: You have less than a month to Claim your piece of the $725M settlement

What To Know

  • To be eligible for a portion of the settlement, you must have had a Facebook account during the specified time frame.
  • While you are automatically eligible if you meet this criteria, you need to officially file a claim by filling out a form.
  • You can do this online by visiting the settlement website and providing information related to your account, such as your address, phone number, Facebook username, and answering some questions to verify your account’s existence within the designated period.
  • The amount of money you receive will depend on how many people submit claims and the duration of your Facebook usage within the specified period.

If you had a Facebook account at any point between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, you have until Aug. 25 to claim your share of the $725 million settlement in the class-action lawsuit involving Cambridge Analytica.

As part of the settlement, Meta (Facebook’s parent company) has agreed to pay the sum, even though they do not admit any wrongdoing. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook allowed unauthorized access to user data by third parties like Cambridge Analytica, a now-defunct data analytics company that worked with Donald Trump’s campaign to gather information on Facebook users’ voting habits.

The online claim must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2023, or postmarked by that date.

When filing your claim, you will need to select your preferred method of receiving the settlement money. You have options such as Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, a prepaid Mastercard, or a physical check.

The amount of money you receive will depend on how many people submit claims and the duration of your Facebook usage within the specified period. Users who maintained an account throughout the entire timeframe will receive a larger share.

The final hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Sept. 7, 2023. After the hearing, the payments will be distributed “as soon as possible,” pending any potential appeals or changes to the schedule.

Remember to submit your claim before Aug. 25 to ensure you receive your share of the Facebook settlement.
