Ahead of the final two races of Season 9 in London, Formula E put on an impressive display of their Gen3 electric race car’s “unlocked” potential. They managed to set a new world record for indoor land speed, reaching a blazing 135.9 MPH (218.71 KPH) in a GenBeta development car.

The exhilarating run took place on a .176-mile straight at the London E-Prix circuit, with part of it inside the ExCeL London arena. The driver behind this incredible feat was none other than Jake Hughes, a talented racer from NEOM McLaren Formula E.

To make things even more exciting, Hughes went head-to-head with Lucas di Grassi from Mahindra Racing in a modified version of Formula E’s duels format, usually reserved for qualifying. Both drivers were given a chance to showcase their skills and set their fastest speeds on the indoor section of the track. They both surpassed the previous world record of 102.7 MPH (165.2 KPH) by an impressive 33 MPH!

What’s amazing is that neither Hughes nor Di Grassi had any prior experience driving the GenBeta car before this exhibition. Yet, they managed to push it to its limits and break records in style.

The GenBeta car boasts several upgrades that make it faster and more powerful than the Gen3 car used in regular race events. It now has an enhanced power output of 400kW, up from 350kW in race trim. This added power is achieved through all-wheel drive, a first for a Formula E car.

They activated the front powertrain kit to provide more traction while accelerating, resulting in breathtaking speed and performance.

The GenBeta car had some cool upgrades that contributed to its amazing performance. It was fitted with softer Hankook tires, which allowed for faster warm-up and better grip when at peak speeds. On race day, they usually use harder tires designed for all conditions and low degradation during an E-Prix. But for this special run, the softer tires were perfect to achieve the record-breaking speed.

To boost aerodynamics and straight-line speed, they added 3D-printed wing endplates, wheel fins, and a wind deflector. These modifications helped the car cut through the air more efficiently, making it even faster on the straight track.

The technology used to analyze the drivers’ runs was also pretty advanced. They employed AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms powered by Google’s Vertex platform and McKinsey & Company’s QuantumBlack. This high-tech analysis helped interpret the drivers’ telemetry data and fine-tune their racing strategy.

For the record to be official, the drivers had to start from a standstill and completely stop inside the convention center. This meant taking a challenging 130-degree turn at about 25 MPH before going full speed along the straight. The speeds were measured 16.4 feet before they hit the braking zone, which is the section of the circuit where they needed to stop and remain inside the building.

Now, the regular Gen3 car is already pretty impressive as the fastest and most efficient electric racer ever built. It can reach speeds of over 200 MPH and generates 40 percent of the power it needs through braking during an E-Prix. But the GenBeta takes things to another level.

It’s described as an “innovation platform” created by Formula E, the FIA, Sabic, and Hankook. The goal of projects involving this car is to experiment with new materials and technology, all to increase performance, efficiency, and sustainability in electric racing. So, it’s not just about breaking records; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of electric racing!
