When Threads initially launched, it lacked many of the features that users would typically expect from a service akin to Twitter, which is now part of X. Nevertheless, over the recent months, Company has been progressively introducing a slew of new features to enhance the user experience.

These additions include the capability to conduct polls, an effortless method to share GIFs, and the ability to quote posts on the web. However, the absence of an API remains a significant limitation, preventing third-party developers from tailoring unique features that could further integrate this social network into people’s daily lives.

One notable example of this shortfall is the inability of local transportation agencies to automatically disseminate service alerts in cases of train delays.

According to Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, there are plans in motion to develop an API for Threads, but he harbors concerns regarding its potential usage. In response to a discussion on the platform about creating a TweetDeck-like experience for Threads, Mosseri stated, “We’re working on it.”

He expressed apprehensions that the API’s launch might result in an influx of publisher content at the expense of creator-generated content, but he acknowledged that it’s a necessary endeavor for the company.

Instagram Head announces Development Of Threads API

Mosseri had previously clarified that Threads would not serve as an amplifier for news, which might have disappointed publishers and readers seeking an alternative to X. Instead, the platform aims to empower creators as a whole. In a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Mosseri outlined his team’s long-term ambition for Threads to become the preeminent platform for public online conversations.

This ambition encompasses achieving cultural relevance and substantial user growth. While he believes that Threads has the potential to surpass X, he recognizes that there’s a substantial journey ahead. Presently, his team remains dedicated to enhancing the user experience on a weekly basis.

Mark Zuckerberg recently disclosed that Threads boasts “just under” 100 million monthly active users. He shares Mosseri’s optimism about the platform’s future and envisions a “good chance” of reaching the milestone of 1 billion users within the next couple of years.
