Despite being nearly a decade old, Grand Theft Auto V is still one of the most popular games around. As I’m writing this, more than 151,000 people are playing it on Steam alone. It’s a big moneymaker for Rockstar Games’ owner, Take-Two.

A big reason for GTA V’s ongoing success is roleplaying. Lots of players use mods to make characters that live, work, and have fun with more freedom in the game’s world. And now, Rockstar is stepping into that space. The team behind the major GTA V mods, like FiveM, and Red Dead Redemption 2 mods, like RedM, has joined forces with Rockstar.

Company announced, “We’ve been watching with excitement as players have found new ways to expand GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, especially through roleplay servers. To show support, we’re officially including mods made by the roleplay community. By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we’ll help them improve the services they provide to players and developers.”

The Cfx.re team is thrilled too. They posted in a forum, “This is a big step forward for us. We’ll work with Rockstar to improve our platform and community. With Rockstar’s help, we’re excited about what this means for our users, community, and creators!”

A lot of players are using the FiveM mod on custom servers. The popular NoPixel server uses FiveM to make roleplaying even better.

Rockstar and Cfx.re haven’t given all the details about their plans for the mods yet. But Rockstar can now make decisions about them. It’ll definitely want to keep supporting GTA Online and its community. But there’s also a new Grand Theft Auto game coming up.

When Grand Theft Auto VI comes out, maybe next year, it could have great roleplaying features thanks to Cfx.re. So, Rockstar might control the roleplaying scene in GTA VI by having it in the game and limiting mods. This is just a guess, but it’s worth thinking about how this will affect the GTA roleplaying community in the future.
