Spotify is currently testing a cutting-edge AI-powered feature that crafts playlists based on text prompts. A TikTok user, @robdad_, shared a brief video, exclaiming, “I just randomly discovered Spotify’s ChatGPT?” This innovative feature is accessible to select users under “Your Library” after initiating the playlist creation process with a tap on the plus sign. While TechCrunch reported this development, it remains uncertain if Spotify intends to roll out the AI playlist feature to the public.

The in-app description for the feature encourages users to “Turn your ideas into playlists using Al,” albeit currently available only in English. A chatbot field for custom inputs is complemented by suggested prompts such as “Get focused at work with instrumental electronica,” “Fill the silence with background cafe music,” “Get pumped up with fun, beat, and positive songs,” and “Explore a niche genre like Witch House.”

Opting for the last suggestion, @robdad_ received a personalized “Witch House Exploration playlist.” The bot’s response included instructions to refine the playlist by swiping left to remove unwanted songs. The TikTok clip doesn’t reveal the AI’s speed in generating the tracks.

The resulting playlist, heavily featuring Grimes, included tracks like “Bloom for Me” by Pearly Drops, “Goth” by Sidewalks and Skeletons, and “Pin” by Grimes. Whether the AI successfully curated a Witch House playlist remains a question for enthusiasts in the genre.

Spotify, when approached by TechCrunch, remained tight-lipped about the potential public release of AI playlists. A spokesperson stated, “We routinely conduct several tests,” emphasizing that some tests serve as learning experiences while others shape the broader user experience. As of now, there is no additional information available.

Should Spotify decide to launch this feature, it could potentially be introduced as an incentive for users to opt for a higher subscription tier. The music streaming giant, eager to integrate AI into its offerings, previously introduced an AI DJ feature earlier this year. CEO Daniel Ek also hinted at leveraging AI to “contextualize and personalize content” during a July earnings call.

While Spotify explores advanced features, it recently underwent its third round of layoffs in 2023, reflecting the broader trend of job cuts in the tech industry throughout the year.
