Waymo says its robotaxis are now making 50,000 paid trips

Waymo’s presence in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles has been noticeably increasing, thanks to a growing number of people opting for rides in its robotaxis. The Alphabet-owned company recently announced on Twitter that it’s now completing over 50,000 paid trips every week across these three cities.

This equates to an average of 300 bookings per hour or five bookings every minute, showcasing the significant demand for Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service. Additionally, Waymo One, the company’s service, operates round the clock in specific areas of these cities, providing convenience and accessibility to riders.

Waymo attributes its success in reaching this milestone to its “safe and deliberate approach” towards scaling its program. The company highlighted how people from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles utilize their service for various reasons, such as carefree travel, gaining independence, simplifying their commute, and more. The statement emphasizes Waymo’s belief in fully autonomous ride-hailing as a practical and preferred mobility option for daily city navigation.

Although Waymo’s progress appears robust compared to some competitors, such as Cruise, which recently resumed deploying its autonomous vehicles after a hiatus, Waymo hasn’t been without challenges. In April, six Waymo robotaxis were involved in a traffic incident that caused congestion on a San Francisco freeway.

This incident was one of several instances where Waymo vehicles contributed to traffic blockages. Additionally, earlier this year, two Waymo vehicles were involved in a collision with the same pickup truck due to incorrect predictions by their software regarding the truck’s movements. In response, Waymo issued a software recall to rectify the issue and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite these challenges, Waymo’s steady growth in providing autonomous ride-hailing services underscores the increasing acceptance and adoption of autonomous mobility solutions.

As technology continues to advance and improve, companies like Waymo are paving the way for a future where autonomous vehicles play a significant role in urban transportation, offering efficient, safe, and convenient travel options for commuters.
