What To Know

  • The curtain is set to fall on Microsoft’s 18-year-old Xbox Live Gold service on September 14, as it faces its final sunset behind the corporate walls of Redmond, Washington.
  • It may not grant access to the expansive library of hundreds of games that its full-fledged counterpart provides, but it does extend an invitation to a handpicked selection of xbox 36 titles.
  • These additions join the ranks of AAA titles like Dishonored 2, Doom Eternal, and Forza Horizon 4, creating an eclectic collection that defies expectations and doesn’t resemble a mere hodgepodge of leftovers, despite what a skeptical observer might have anticipated.

The comprehensive roster of 36 titles set to replace Xbox Live Gold with Game Pass Core has been unveiled, a day ahead of its official launch. These titles are, quite simply, exceptional. The curtain is set to fall on Microsoft’s 18-year-old Xbox Live Gold service on September 14, as it faces its final sunset behind the corporate walls of Redmond, Washington. This service, a relic from the pre-Game Pass era, has seen its Games with Gold monthly offerings dwindle into the shadows of obscurity. At this juncture, it appears a merciful gesture to bid it farewell.

Stepping into the void left by its predecessor is the vibrant and youthful xbox Game Pass Core. Core, essentially mirroring Sony’s PlayStation Plus Essential service, emerges as the budget-friendly incarnation of Game Pass.

It may not grant access to the expansive library of hundreds of games that its full-fledged counterpart provides, but it does extend an invitation to a handpicked selection of xbox 36 titles. Moreover, it retains the somehow still gated gateway to online gaming. The noteworthy aspect is the quality of these 36 titles; they are truly outstanding.

While we had previously received insights into 25 of the featured games, Microsoft chose to keep Gold members in suspense until the eleventh hour. Among the standout newcomers are titles such as Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors, Among Us, Firewatch, and Dead Cells.

Microsoft reveals the first 36 titles in the Xbox Game Pass Core library

These additions join the ranks of AAA titles like Dishonored 2, Doom Eternal, and Forza Horizon 4, creating an eclectic collection that defies expectations and doesn’t resemble a mere hodgepodge of leftovers, despite what a skeptical observer might have anticipated. (Hello.)

Core will bear the same price tag as Xbox Gold, at a monthly rate of $10, with existing customers seamlessly transitioning to the new service. It’s a pricing conundrum, considering that the full-fledged Game Pass is available for just one additional dollar, offering access to the same games and hundreds more. However, for Core, there is also the option to secure a full year’s subscription for $60, effectively halving the monthly cost.

Such discounts do not seem to apply to the higher-tier subscriptions. In all honesty, though, $60 for 36 genuinely exceptional games is an enticing proposition. Meanwhile, Game Pass Ultimate recently saw a slight uptick in its monthly subscription fee, now standing at $16.99.

There is, however, a caveat to be mindful of: Core will receive new game additions only two or three times per year, as opposed to Gold’s monthly rotation. Nevertheless, as previously mentioned, the quality of the offerings is top-notch. Here’s the complete list:

  • Among Us
  • Astroneer
  • Celeste
  • Dead Cells
  • Descenders
  • Dishonored 2
  • Doom Eternal Standard Edition
  • Fable Anniversary
  • Fallout 4
  • Fallout 76
  • Firewatch
  • Forza Horizon 4 Standard Edition
  • Gang Beasts
  • Gears 5 Game of the Year Edition
  • Golf with your Friends
  • Grounded
  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • Human Fall Flat
  • Inside
  • Limbo
  • Ori & the Will of the Wisps
  • Overcooked! 2
  • Payday 2: Crimewave Edition
  • Powerwash Simulator
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Slay the Spire
  • Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition
  • Stardew Valley
  • State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition

Enthusiastic gamers are likely to have already acquired most of their desired titles from this collection over the past couple of years. Core, it seems, is not tailored for them.

Consider Xbox Core as the Game Pass version you’d gift to your technologically novice aunt when she receives her first console—an appetizing sampler of the gaming realm. In fact, titles like Powerwash Simulator and Fallout 4 alone could keep most individuals engrossed for an entire year.

Meanwhile, the ongoing practice of charging monthly fees for online access on consoles remains baffling and exasperating. In the realm of PC gaming, such a concept is virtually unheard of, with online access being universally free.
